PURCARI | Cuvée de Purcari | Extra Brut Alb |
Today we are going to review one of the rising stars of local crémant wines – Cuvée de Purcari Extra Brut Alb by Purcari. This wine is made the same way as the world’s most famous sparkling wines of the Champagne region, using the authentic ‘méthode traditionnelle‘ style, with bottle remuage using all three grape varieties that are allowed in the Champagne region: chardonnay, pinot blanc and pinot noir. The wine underwent a long term bottle fermentation, a process that delivers creaminess and roundness due to the ‘sur lie’ wine contact and an elegant ‘perlage’, which are the two most essential characteristics of a sparkling wine. But enough theory, let’s get straight to the tasting!
MINIS TERRIOS | Rosu Imparat | 2015
The wine we are going to review tonight is a bit special – Rosu Imparat 2015 by Minis Terrios. This is the winemaker’s first wine blend, made of two indigenous grape varieties – feteasca neagra and rara neagra, enchanted with a bit of cabernet sauvignon in order to get more structure and complexity. All three varieties were vinified and aged in oak barrels individually, with different ageing times: cabernet sauvignon was aged for 20 months, part of the feteasca neagra (50%) – for 12 months, while rara neagra – for 8 months. But enough theory, without further ado, let’s get straight to the tasting!
GITANA WINERY | Surori | 2017
The wine we are going to review today is quite special – Surori 2017 by Gitana Winery. This is a rosé blend made of saperavi and rara neagra grape varieties, which are two of the most seldom used varieties in a rosé wine. The wine is named after the two sisters, Liliana and Iuliana Dulgher, also pointing at the two varieties picked for the blend – one flamboyant and expressive and the other delicate and subtle. With grapes harvested by hand in the Valul lui Traian region, this wine is intended to capture the character of its area of origin. But enough theory, without further ado, let’s get straight to the tasting!

TIMBRUS | De Autor | Blend No.2 | 2015
The wine we are going to review tonight is a special one – De Autor Blend No.2 2015 by Timbrus. This is the winemaker’s flagship wine – a blend of saperavi, syrah and malbec, produced in the famous Purcari micro-region in the south-east of Moldova and signed by Manuel Vicente Ortiz Martinez – the renown spanish oenologist. This is the successor of the De Autor 2014 wine and, as is the norm for this class of wines, it has been aged for 16 months in french oak barrels, followed by a long maturation period in the bottle, but let’s not put too much emphasis on the theory. Without further ado, let’s get on to the tasting!
PURCARI | Rosu de Purcari | 2014
The wine we are going to review today is a classic Bordeaux-style blend with the label ‘Made in Moldova’ – a wine that has acquired a legendary status over the years – Rosu de Purcari 2014 by Purcari. The blend is composed of cabernet sauvignon, merlot and malbec varieties, made from grapes harvested and selected by hand. It was produced using traditional methods, thus, the wine was aged for 18 months in french oak barrels – this blend is nothing less than a bottled art and is part of the winemaker’s flagship line of premium wines that are famous all over the world, but let’s get rid of the theory part. Without further ado, let’s move on straight to the tasting!
